Brandywine Hospital Adds Second, Full-Time Neurosurgeon to Staff
Recognizing a critical lack of neurosurgical care in Chester County, Brandywine Hospital and Brandywine Valley Neurosurgery and Spine recently welcomed its second neurosurgeon, Julian Mattiello, MD, PhD. This addition makes Brandywine the only hospital in the County to have two dedicated, full-time neurosurgeons on staff.
“People suffering from a neurological condition often had to travel outside Chester County for care due to limited availability of these services in our community,” said Mark Benz, CEO, Brandywine Hospital. “Now, patients can take comfort in knowing that this critical component of health care is available every day, around-the-clock, and close to home.”
Dr. Mattiello partners with Andrew Freese, MD, PhD, medical director of neurosurgery at Brandywine Hospital, to create a full-spectrum neuroscience program that combines safe, competent, and compassionate care with sophisticated technology to diagnose and treat patients with a host of neurological disorders.
"I am excited about working with Dr. Freese and Brandywine Hospital in meeting the rapidly growing neurosurgical needs of this region,” said Dr. Mattiello.
As part of their efforts, Drs. Freese and Mattiello will establish the most comprehensive neurosurgery and spine program in Chester County. Through a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates specialists in neurosurgery, neurology, pain management, orthopedics, and physical therapy, strengthened by close interaction among referring physicians, the Neurosurgery Spine Program at Brandywine Hospital will provide a full complement of services to diagnose and treat disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including disc herniation, back and neck pain, fractures, and tumors of the spinal cord. IIn addition to his role in the Neurosurgery Spine Program, Dr. Mattiello will also focus on expanding the medical and surgical services in Brandywine Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Program.
“In hospitals that provide cutting-edge care to stroke patients, neurosurgeons are very important members of the treatment team,” explained Dr. Mattiello. “Having a proactive collaboration will benefit our stroke patients by offering both leading-edge surgical and non-surgical treatment options.”
Known among his peers as a “technical innovator,” Dr. Mattiello brings a wealth of educational and professional experience in the neurosciences to Brandywine Hospital. A graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, he completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He also trained in pediatric neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was a compensated research fellow in the multidisciplinary spinal cord injury laboratories at the Drexel University College of Medicine. He most recently completed a neurosurgical residency at the University of Chicago where he worked aside some of the nation’s leading neurosurgeons and learned various minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. He has authored numerous abstracts and professional journal articles, and has been an invited speaker at a variety of national medical conferences and meetings.
“We are thrilled to have recruited a neurosurgeon of such great quality and varied abilities,” added Benz. “In the short time he has been at Brandywine, Dr. Mattiello has demonstrated exceptional expertise, energy, and enthusiasm, and is definitely an asset to our hospital and our community.”
