Brandywine Hospital Now Offers Digital Mammography

Brandywine celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month with new technology and pink pumpkins

(October 2009 – Coatesville, PA)—Brandywine Hospital’s Women’s Diagnostic Center now offers cutting-edge digital mammography technology. This advanced screening tool aids in the early detection of breast cancer, when it is critical for successful diagnosis and treatment.

“While regular self and clinical examinations are important, imaging tools, such as digital mammography, can better detect a tumor or show changes in the breast long before it can be felt by a woman or physician during a physical exam, particularly in women under 50 and women with dense breast tissue,” explained Leann Hertzler, Director of Radiology at Brandywine.

From the patient’s viewpoint, a digital mammogram is virtually the same as a standard film mammogram, in terms of breast compression. The difference becomes clear upon exposure for the breast imaging specialist. Digital technology allows the clinician to store each image in a computer where it can be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation all while delivering less radiation and faster results than conventional mammography. Digital images can also be easily stored and transferred electronically to other healthcare professionals, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics demonstrate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s survival.

The American Cancer Society recommends that woman over 40 should receive screening mammograms every year. However, those who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer should seek expert medical advice about whether they should begin screening before age 40 and about the frequency and type of screening.

The introduction of this new technology at Brandywine coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and another popular breast cancer hospital tradition, pink pumpkins, which are on display in front of the hospital.

"Brandywine is serious about promoting breast cancer awareness and early detection and is committed to providing exceptional care to the women in our community. When patients utilize our services, they can feel confident that they're receiving the best care possible," stated Mark A. Benz, CEO, Brandywine Hospital.
