General Requirements for Admission to the School of Nursing

Students applying for admission to the Brandywine School of Nursing must meet the following requirements:

A. General scholarship as evidenced by the secondary school record. All applicants must qualify or have graduated from an approved secondary school (as determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education), or have met the requirements for the GED, issued by the Department of Education. Applicants must submit a transcript from an approved secondary school or its equivalent, and have completed a minimum of 16 units including:

  • English 4
  • Chemistry 1
  • Biology 1
  • Mathematics 2 (Algebra required)
  • Social Studies 3
  • Electives 5
  • Minimum of a “C” in Biology, Chemistry and Algebra is required

Additional math courses are recommended (Algebra II and Geometry). It is suggested that the student pursue a college preparatory rather than a vocational or general education program of study. Electives should be chosen in the physical, social or behavioral sciences. Post-secondary college level equivalents will be considered to fulfill the above requirements. A cumulative 2.5 high school GPA is required.

B. Satisfactory achievement on the Scholastic Aptitude Test administered by the College Entrance Examination Board or the ACT Assessment Program administered by the American College Testing Program. Arrangements for taking the examinations are made through the secondary school guidance office or by writing directly to the respective test organization. The SAT or ACT scores are not required if five years or more have elapsed since high school graduation or receipt of GED.

The minimum scores considered for full-time acceptance are a SAT combined score of 920 (recentered) or an ACT composite score of 18. Those high school students whose records do not demonstrate their true potential may be asked to successfully complete some college course work before they enter nursing.

C. Satisfactory achievement on the Diagnostic Entrance Test (DET).

D. Candidates whose credentials meet initial requirements are invited for a visit to the school for a personal interview. At the time of interview, candidates are asked to complete a Request for Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse History Clearance form. The applicant is responsible for submitting the forms to the Pennsylvania State Police with the required fees for processing. Completed clearances are required prior to matriculation.

E. The Admissions Committee meets monthly to review completed applicant files and makes a decision regarding acceptance. Each individual applicant for admission is evaluated on personal and academic credentials and potential for success in the program. Personal information includes extracurricular records, biographical information furnished on the application, and two letters of reference from teachers, guidance counselors, employers, or community leaders. Applicants life experience may be considered regarding acceptance. Applicants are notified promptly of the committee’s decision.

F. Those candidates whose credentials do not meet nursing admission requirements are notified promptly, so that they may pursue other opportunities. The Admissions Committee may require candidates to complete prescribed college course work with a “C” or better and be re-evaluated for admission. Candidates are advised of their status by letter.
