Coatesville PA (February 7, 2017)– Building on its established reputation as a leader in cardiac care, Brandywine Hospital recently applied and was granted full, three year accreditation as a Chest Pain Center with PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). The SCPC is a non-profit international society that promotes protocol-based medicine and the adoption of process improvement science by healthcare providers to address heart attacks and acute heart failure.
To earn this designation, Brandywine had to meet or exceed a wide set of stringent criteria, as well as complete an on-site evaluation by a SCPC review team. “This is momentous not only for our hospital and patients, but the community as well,” said Brandywine Hospital CEO, Jeff Hunt. “It’s another step in our unwavering commitment to provide quality, emergency and cardiac care to the residents of Chester County. Although the focus is on our emergency department (ED) and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, this accreditation is possible because of the work and dedication of a multidisciplinary team including employees, physicians, nurses and Chester County Emergency Medical Services (EMS).”
Chest pain is among the top symptoms of patients who visit Brandywine’s ED. Accreditation as a Chest Pain Center means that any patient who comes to the hospital experiencing chest pain can be confident he or she is receiving care that meets or exceeds the nation’s highest standards. Positive patient outcomes depend on timely intervention, diagnosis and treatment. Working in collaboration with cardiologists and emergency physicians, the Chest Pain Center certification process requires Brandywine to consistently demonstrate streamlined diagnosis and treatment, integration with paramedics/EMS, community education and other key factors that help ensure better outcomes for patients.
To minimize the risk of lasting heart damage, the American College of Cardiology recommends physicians reestablish blood flow to the heart with a balloon angioplasty within 90 minutes of admission to the ED. Brandywine on average records door-to-balloon times of 57 minutes or less.
“Quick response, diagnosis and treatment save lives and heart muscle,” says board-certified cardiologist with Brandywine Valley Cardiology, Antonio Chamoun, M.D., medical director of the Brandywine Hospital Catheterization Laboratory at the hospital. “Permanent heart muscle damage can lead to chronic fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath, reducing quality of life. Patients can be confident that our skilled team of physicians and nurses, along with our advanced technology and exceptional response time to cardiac emergencies will give them the best chance of survival and recovery.”
The technological and educational advances in EMS today allow timely and accurate recognition of a heart attack, as well as testing and immediate transmission of the results to an emergency physician. “More times than you would think, our team is awaiting EMS’s arrival, ready to take the patient to the Cath Lab for immediate treatment. We are proud to work closely with the specialists at Brandywine and to have been involved with the chest pain accreditation and specialized care that ultimately benefits our patients,” says Leo R. Scaccia, III, RN, NRP, Director, Medic 93 at Brandywine Hospital.
